Between Expectations

Children sometimes get sick. Not just fevers and runny noses and fussy nights for a few days sick, but frighteningly and acutely ill. It shouldn't be this way. If it were different - if the world were more just and less cruel - then I would be out of a job. And that would be fine with me. Because then I could focus on other things, like becoming a world famous tap dancer or something similarly thrilling and frivolous, and I would love it and never, ever feel like I should be doing anything else.

But the world is not that way. So I went to medical school. And then I did a residency at two very busy hospitals in Boston. And then I wrote a book. Buy it. Maybe even read it. And then tell me what you think.
